Season Numbers

Eight games marks just under a quarter of the WNBA season, and thanks to some process changes and new spreadsheets that I made in the offseason, I can actually track my season data automatically as it progresses rather than trying to run all the numbers manually at the end of the season. I thought the quarter mark would be a good place to take a look at where the team is so far in the season.

Team Numbers

Offensive Rating: 98.38 points per 100 possessions
Field Goal Percentage: 41%
Three Point Field Goal Percentage: 27%
Offensive Rebound Percentage: 31%
Free Throw Percentage: 77%

Offensively, the Storm are about 6 points per 100 possessions worse on offense than they were in 2007. They have not had an offensive rating below 100 since the 2002 season when they were 98.83. Their pace has dropped by 4 possessions per game from 2007 as well which is down to their 2005 pace before the 24 second shot clock. 24% of their shots are three pointers this seson, down from 29% in 2007, which is probably good, since they are shooting 8 points worse from long range this season. Their offensive rebounding is the same as it was last season, while their field goal percentage is down 2 points.

Defensive Rating: 97.52 points per 100 possessions
Defensive Field Goal Percentage: 40%
Defensive Three Point Field Goal Percentage: 31%
Defensive Rebound Percentage: 67%

Seattle's defensive rating is improved significantly, down 6 points per 100 possessions from last season and their best rating since their 2004 championship season (95.06). Unfortunately, in 2004 they also had a much better offensive rating (102.32). They are holding teams field goal percentage three points lower than in 2007, and 5 points lower from long range. There defensive rebound percentage is three points worse than last season however.

As a team, if Seattle wants to make a serious push, they must improve their offense significantly. They need to improve their defensive rebounding, and they need to improve their three point shooting.
